Key Information

Before getting started, it’s important to understand how a VET Student Loan works.

  • A VET Student Loan is a loan from the Commonwealth and must be repaid
  • The loan covers tuition fees only
  • The VET Student Loan does not cover additional costs such as medicals, uniforms, licensing or living expenses
  • You will need to start repaying your VET Student Loan once your income reaches the repayment threshold
  • A 20% loan fee may apply, which is added to the loan amount (not paid upfront) – loan arrangements are set by the Australian Government
  • The VET Student Loan is repaid through the Australian tax system
  • The loan is indexed each year, meaning your balance may increase over time
  • The loan will remain a personal debt until it is repaid to the commonwealth
  • Repaying your VET Student Loan through the tax system will reduce your take-home pay after tax and may reduce your borrowing capacity

Eligibility and Application

Am I eligible?

Eligibility is set by the Australian Government. In general, you will need to:

  • Meet citizenship and residency requirements
  • Have available HELP loan balance
  • Be enrolled in an approved course
  • Meet academic suitability requirements

After enrolment and a short cooling-off period, you’ll receive a secure link to complete an electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF).

Submitting your eCAF is a legal declaration that you understand and accept a VET Student Loan debt.

Yes. You may wish to seek independent financial advice before applying for a loan.

Census Dates (Important)

Each part of your course has a census date. This is the date your VET Student Loan is applied for that fee period.

  • Withdraw before the census date → no loan debt
  • Withdraw after the census date → loan debt applies

Your census dates will be provided before you begin and can also be accessed below.

Fees and loan caps

VET Student Loans are subject to Australian Government loan caps, which set the maximum amount that can be borrowed for each course. For most students, the full course fee is covered within this limit.
